Manus is compelling for one specific reason: it can move from research into action without forcing the user to stitch together a separate browser agent, coding tool, and automation layer. That breadth is visible in the product and its documentation. Reliability is the unresolved part. We found enough evidence to recommend a controlled pilot, but not enough independent proof to recommend unattended use in privileged business systems.

Is Manus AI the right fit for your team?

Manus should be judged by the work it can reliably own, the systems it can safely touch, and the controls your team needs after launch. This review focuses on workflow fit, credit economics, browser and connector risk, evidence to verify in a pilot, and realistic alternatives. Use the snapshot below as a fast first filter, then read the deeper sections for proof points and red flags.

  • Shortlist when: you need one agent surface that can research in parallel, drive a cloud or local browser, build or export simple web apps, and take tasks from email or Slack under human supervision.
  • Validate before buying: run real workloads against the credit meter, test approval flows for email and deploys, map Browser Operator and connector data paths, and get written answers on legal entity, retention, and training use after the Meta announcement.
  • Compare against: general assistants such as ChatGPT et Claude when action breadth is optional, and against builder or automation tools such as Replit, Cursor, et n8n when the job is narrower than a full autonomous agent platform.

Our verdict

Impressive range, incomplete proof

Manus is most convincing when a task crosses boundaries: research a market, collect material in a browser, turn the findings into a deck or small web app, and return a finished artifact. The Browser Operator documentation, Wide Research documentation, et API documentation establish that these are real product surfaces, not just homepage promises.

What those pages do not establish is how often Manus completes a messy business workflow correctly, how much a representative run costs in credits, or how safely it behaves inside an authenticated account. We did not buy a plan or run an independent workload benchmark for this review. That limitation matters more than another feature list, so our recommendation is deliberately conditional.

Shortlist Manus for supervised research, browser work, and artifact creation where a person can inspect the sources and approve side effects. Prefer ChatGPT ou Claude when reasoning and drafting are the main job; Lovable ou Replit when shipping an app is the main job; and n8n when a deterministic, auditable workflow matters more than agent flexibility.

What this review is-and is not

This is a desk review with a buyer-risk lens, not a paid hands-on benchmark. We checked Manus product pages, pricing, Team packaging, Trust Center material, privacy and terms, feature documentation, updates, and API references. Claims from Manus are linked as vendor claims. Where we use outside experience, we label the source and its incentives.

For an independent counterweight, we reviewed Lindy's hands-on Manus assessment, which reports testing Wide Research, Cloud Browser, and an app build. Lindy sells a competing automation product, so its observations are useful but not neutral laboratory evidence. Community reports are even noisier: they help reveal failure modes, but a Reddit success or complaint cannot establish an average success rate.

Our standard is simple: official documentation can prove that a feature exists; a recorded demo can show the intended interaction; an independent test can reveal concrete strengths and failures; only repeated buyer testing can establish reliability for your workflow. The real cost driver is opaque credit burn, not the sticker price

Manus prices look simple at $20, $40, and $200 monthly cards, but the unit that matters is the credit. The public pricing page does not publish a full rate card by model, tool, browser step, Wide Research fan-out, or Cloud Computer minute. It also does not explain the exact relationship between the 300 daily refresh credits and the monthly credit pool, or whether unused credits roll over, expire, or convert to overage purchases.

  • Sticker vs workload: A light research-and-draft week may fit 4,000 monthly credits. Parallel Wide Research jobs, long browser sessions, and always-on Cloud Computer work can exhaust the same pool far faster without a published per-action price.
  • Daily refresh is not a free unlimited buffer: 300 refresh credits every day sounds generous until a single multi-agent research run or authenticated browser job burns through them. Measure daily and monthly meters on the same pilot tasks.
  • Concurrency is capped at 20 concurrent and 20 scheduled tasks on the individual cards we inspected. Product teams building queue-style automation must treat that as a throughput ceiling separate from API rate limits.
  • Team economics shift from per-user cards to seats plus pooled credits. The public calculator default we observed was 20 seats, 4,000 credits per seat, 80,000 pooled credits, and about $4,000/year. Shared pools help uneven usage patterns but hide which member burns the budget unless dashboards break usage down.
  • API rate limits are per user, not per plan tier. Documented examples include task.create and task.sendMessage at 10 per minute. That is independent of credit burn and can throttle product integrations even on higher spend.
  • Full-bill reality: Model your month as base plan + expected credit-heavy jobs + any Cloud Computer need + Team seats if collaboration and SSO matter. Do not compare Manus to ChatGPT Pro or Claude Pro on subscription price alone; compare cost per completed supervised workflow.

Practical pilot rule: pick three production-shaped jobs (for example competitive research pack, inbox-to-brief pipeline, and browser form fill against a sandbox SaaS). Run each twice, record credits used, wall time, human edits required, and failed or partial steps. Only then choose between the $20, $40, and $200 cards or Team.

  • Wide Research decomposes large jobs into parallel sub-agents with separate VMs, tools, and internet access, then consolidates output. Useful for competitive intel, market scans, and bulk creative packs when humans still verify sources.
  • Explicit confirmation flows in API docs for consequential actions such as sending Gmail or Outlook messages and deploying a website. That is a real control surface many pure chat products still treat as afterthought.
  • Team features that matter to IT: pooled credits, shared projects/skills/instructions, usage and access dashboard, SSO, granular sharing permissions, and audit logs on the public Team page.
  • Trust Center lists SOC 2 Type I and Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and ISO/IEC 27701:2019 with reports available via access request, plus encryption, sandbox isolation, and a stated 72-hour breach notification process.
  • API v2 covers tasks, projects, files, webhooks, skills, agents, connectors, browser access, website publishing, structured output, and usage, which supports product and ops teams that need programmatic control rather than only a chat UI.

  • Credit opacity: without a public action-level rate card, forecasting is guesswork until you burn real workloads. Heavy browser and multi-agent research can surprise finance teams.
  • Plan naming mismatch: public price cards avoid durable Free/Pro/Plus labels, while Browser Operator docs still mention Pro, Plus, and Team. Confirm gating in checkout, not marketing copy.
  • Legal entity and acquisition clarity: product messaging says Manus is part of Meta; Terms and Privacy still list Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd. Buyers need the current contracting entity, DPA, and post-acquisition data position in writing.
  • Retention and browser data-flow inconsistencies between Trust FAQ and Privacy Policy require written architecture diagrams before connecting regulated or high-sensitivity systems.
  • Output quality is explicitly user-owned risk in Manus Terms. Unreviewed agent output is not suitable for legal, medical, financial, hiring, security, or customer commitments.
  • Not a full engineering platform or helpdesk. For repository-centered delivery prefer Replit ou Cursor. For deterministic SaaS orchestration prefer n8n. For reasoning-first chat without deep browser autonomy, prefer Claude or ChatGPT.

Surfaces, channels, and integrations

Manus is less a single chat window and more a set of action surfaces that feed one agent runtime. Buyers should map each surface to a risk tier before enabling it organization-wide.

  • Web product and desktop / My Computer: primary workspace for tasks, files, skills, and local file or app access introduced in 2026 updates.
  • Cloud Browser: remote sandbox browser that can preserve authenticated sessions through encrypted cookies and local storage. Treat saved sessions as privileged credentials.
  • Browser Operator / My Browser: Chrome and Edge extension path for local control sessions. Trust materials say it needs explicit authorization per session, shows actions in a dedicated tab group, can be stopped or taken over, and does not store passwords. Plan gating language still uses Pro/Plus/Team labels that do not match price-card names cleanly.
  • Mail Manus: create an @manus.bot receiving address, link approved sending addresses, and turn forwarded or CC'd mail into tasks for RFP intake, vendor follow-up, and approval loops.
  • Slack: connect under Settings, mention @manus in a thread. Official FAQ notes one task at a time per thread and requires a paid Slack plan for AI features.
  • Connectors: OAuth in the web app, then pass connector UUIDs into API tasks. Catalog examples include Slack, Notion, Zapier, Asana, monday.com, Make, Linear, Atlassian, ClickUp, OpenAI, Supabase, Vercel, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Hugging Face, Perplexity, HubSpot, Intercom, Stripe, PayPal, Ahrefs, Xero, Similarweb, Dropbox, Airtable, and My Browser. Trust materials also name Google Drive, Gmail, Google Calendar, and GitHub. Test scopes and plan availability rather than inferring from the catalog.
  • API v2 and webhooks: asynchronous task lifecycle with states such as running, stopped, waiting for user confirmation, and error. Suitable for product teams embedding Manus behind internal queues.
  • Web-app generation: conversational full-stack app claims with built-in database/backend, code export, custom domains, version control/rollback, sharing controls, Stripe, and SEO tooling. Validate ownership, export completeness, hosting region, and security review before revenue-critical use.

Agent workflow and guardrails

Manus tasks run asynchronously. Operators describe a goal, the agent plans steps, calls tools and browsers, may pause for confirmation, and returns artifacts such as reports, slides, sites, or code. The buying question is not whether demos look smooth. It is whether approvals, least privilege, and audit trails keep external side effects inside policy when the agent is wrong or over-eager.

API documentation describes confirmation for sending Gmail/Outlook messages and deploying a website, including the ability for global allow to skip future deploy confirmations. That flexibility is useful for trusted pipelines and dangerous if granted too early. Implementations should inventory which action classes require approval today, whether approvals are centrally policy-enforced, and whether audit logs capture actor, prompt, connector, approval decision, and output artifact.

Wide Research is the multi-agent pattern: large tasks fan out to parallel sub-agents with their own VMs and tools, then consolidate. That can cut wall-clock time on competitive scans and bulk creative work. It can also multiply credit burn and source-quality variance. Treat claims of handling hundreds of items at uniformly high quality as marketing until you measure citation accuracy, coverage gaps, and cost per finished pack on your sources.

Branch (July 2026) lets users start a parallel session from any message while carrying files, instructions, and history. Skills (January 2026) package repeatable procedures. Cloud Computer (May 2026) offers a dedicated machine for bots, Python scripts, and software that should run around the clock, and appears as Free Cloud Computer on the Extended usage card. Each of these increases operational power and the need for budget and access controls.

  • Start tasks from web, desktop, email, Slack, or API with the same credit pool and governance expectations.
  • Require human confirmation for outbound email, payments, CRM writes, production deploys, and any authenticated browser mutation until you have measured false-action rates.
  • Scope connectors per project and revoke OAuth promptly when pilots end.
  • Separate personal and business workspaces; Team Owners can see member session data, inputs, outputs, and history according to the Trust FAQ.
  • Export or archive critical artifacts outside Manus if retention windows are shorter than your compliance needs.

Public individual pricing presents three usage cards. We avoid calling them Free, Pro, Plus, or Max because those durable names were not visible on the live cards we inspected. Annual billing displays a 17% saving. We could not verify a public individual free-tier entitlement from the live pricing page on check day.

API v2 rate limits are documented per user across all API keys and are not differentiated by subscription tier. Examples include task.create 10/min, task.sendMessage 10/min, task detail/list/messages 100/min, task update/stop/delete/confirmAction 40/min, file upload 40/min, usage endpoints 600/min, and website publish/update 40/min. Throughput planning must account for both credits and these request ceilings.

AI capability and agent execution model

Manus describes itself as LLM-agnostic and says it chooses models by use case. Trust materials state formal agreements so third-party model providers do not train on customer data. That statement is narrower than a promise that Manus never uses prompts, files, outputs, or telemetry for product improvement. The Privacy Policy says personal information including inputs/prompts and user-generated content may be used for service improvement and analytics, and that aggregate or de-identified data may be created and used. Procurement should rely on contract language, not FAQ headlines.

Capability is less about a single flagship model name and more about the execution loop: plan, tool use, browser control, multi-agent research, confirmation gates, and artifact generation. Recent product updates show the direction of travel: Manus 1.6 Max and mobile app development (December 2025), Skills (January 2026), Desktop/My Computer (March 2026), Cloud Computer (May 2026), Similarweb intelligence and Shopify (May to June 2026), and Branch parallel sessions (July 2026).

  • Wide Research: parallel sub-agents with separate VMs for bulk research and creative expansion.
  • Browser and computer use: cloud sandbox plus local Browser Operator for authenticated web work.
  • Structured collaboration: email and Slack as task intake, not only chat transcripts.
  • App generation: conversational web apps with export and domain claims that still need production validation.
  • Programmatic control: API v2 tasks, webhooks, connectors by UUID, and confirmation actions for side effects.

Quality limits are acknowledged by the vendor. Terms warn that output can be inaccurate and that users must independently review it. Slack FAQ guidance also recommends verifying critical information. Design human review into every high-impact path.

Feature areas to verify in a pilot

Use this checklist during a paid or trial pilot. Do not accept a generic "autonomous agent" demo that only drafts text. Require the surfaces your workflow will actually use.

  • Wide Research on a real competitive or market pack with citation and coverage scoring by your team.
  • Cloud Browser session persistence and logout/revocation behavior for authenticated SaaS.
  • Browser Operator on Chrome or Edge: visible action tab group, stop/takeover, and password non-storage claims under your test accounts.
  • Mail Manus intake from a controlled RFP or vendor thread with approved senders only.
  • Mou @manus thread tasking, including the one-task-per-thread constraint.
  • Connector OAuth scopes for the systems you care about; revoke and confirm access ends.
  • API v2 task create, webhook events, and confirmAction for email or deploy.
  • Web-app generation with code export, custom domain, rollback, and a security review of generated dependencies.
  • Cloud Computer job that runs longer than a chat session, with cost visible on the credit meter.
  • Team SSO, sharing permissions, audit log export, and Owner visibility expectations communicated to staff.

Team materials promise a usage and access dashboard alongside pooled credits. For individuals, the operational question is whether you can see burn by task type, model path, browser session, and Wide Research fan-out before the month ends. Without that visibility, the $20 and $40 cards become lottery tickets and the $200 card becomes a blunt instrument.

API usage endpoints are documented with relatively high rate limits (600/min), which suggests programmatic metering is intended. Validate whether you can export usage into finance systems, attribute cost to projects or clients, and distinguish user error from tool failure. Also validate concurrent and scheduled task counts against the 20/20 caps so queue backlogs do not fail silently.

On Team plans, Owner visibility into member sessions is both an operations feature and an employee-privacy issue. Decide in advance what is monitored, who can export history, and how personal experimentation is separated from business workspaces.

Security, data handling, and compliance

Manus publishes a Trust Center at trust.manus.im with SOC 2 Type I, SOC 2 Type II, ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and ISO/IEC 27701:2019 listed, issued via Prescient Security / Prescient Assurance, with reports that may require access request or NDA. Additional claims include encryption in transit and at rest, role-based permissions, administrator MFA, per-user sandbox isolation, vulnerability assessment and penetration testing, and incident processes with breach notification within 72 hours. Treat attestations as real but still request current reports, scope, reporting period, and exclusions.

Trust FAQ states storage in the United States and Singapore with EU Standard Contractual Clauses and other transfer safeguards. Subprocessors listed publicly include Anthropic, Google Cloud Platform, Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, and AWS, among others on the subprocessors page. Map those processors against your vendor review and residency requirements.

  • Request the current contracting entity and DPA. Product pages reference Meta ownership while legal pages still name Butterfly Effect Pte. Ltd.
  • Resolve retention conflicts in writing: Trust FAQ cites browser sandbox deletion after 7 days free / 21 days paid; Privacy Policy cites 7 days free / 14 days paid.
  • Resolve Browser Operator data-flow conflicts: FAQ language about local execution versus Privacy Policy language that page content and action data are transmitted to Manus servers for task processing.
  • Confirm third-party model non-training agreements and, separately, Manus's own improvement/analytics uses of prompts and outputs.
  • Connectors: OAuth authorization, stated non-storage of accessed connector data, and revocation via Settings. Still assume task logs, sandbox files, shell commands, and generated code may be collected for debugging and security per Privacy Policy.
  • Team Owner visibility of member sessions requires policy, notice, and role design before broad rollout.

What questions should you ask before buying Manus AI?

  • What legal entity will appear on the order form, DPA, and invoices after the Meta announcement, and which security addendum applies?
  • What is the credit cost of our top five workloads, including Wide Research fan-out and authenticated browser sessions?
  • How do daily refresh credits interact with the monthly pool, and what happens at exhaustion (hard stop, overage pack, throttling)?
  • Which actions require confirmation today, can global allow bypass them, and are approvals enforced by org policy rather than user preference?
  • What exact data leaves the endpoint when Browser Operator or Cloud Browser runs against our SaaS tools?
  • Which retention schedule governs our SKU for sandbox files, browser artifacts, and task logs?
  • Can Team SSO, audit logs, and sharing controls meet our identity and least-privilege standards, and is SCIM available if we need it?
  • For generated web apps, who owns the code, how complete is export, where is hosting, and what is the rollback guarantee?
  • Do API rate limits and the 20 concurrent / 20 scheduled caps support our queue volume without a custom arrangement?
  • Will you provide reference customers with similar connector mix, supervision model, and monthly credit burn?

What red flags should you watch for with Manus AI?

  • The demo only drafts documents and never runs browser, email send, deploy confirmation, or Wide Research on your sources.
  • Sales cannot produce a written credit estimate for your representative jobs or explains costs only with best-case light tasks.
  • Legal entity, DPA, or subprocessor answers stay verbal after you point out Meta messaging versus Butterfly Effect legal pages.
  • Retention and Browser Operator data-flow questions receive conflicting links with no architecture diagram.
  • Team rollout enables Owner-wide session visibility without employee notice or separate personal workspaces.
  • Global allow for deploys or outbound mail is turned on during the pilot to "reduce friction."
  • Generated apps are pushed toward production without export, dependency, and security review.
  • You already standardize on Claude or ChatGPT for reasoning and only need light automation, making Manus breadth unnecessary overhead.

Pick alternatives by dominant job. Autonomous agent platforms are not interchangeable with coding IDEs, workflow engines, or general chat assistants.

What Manus AI needs to prove in a real workflow

A polished homepage is not enough. The buying question is whether Manus can move from intent to supervised completion without silent credit blowouts or unapproved side effects. Run this four-step test before committing.

  1. Baseline three jobs.Define a research pack, an email or Slack intake task, and a browser mutation against a sandbox system. Write success criteria, maximum credit budget, and required human approvals before you start.
  2. Execute with meters on.Run each job on the Standard or Customizable card. Record credits consumed, wall time, concurrent task behavior, confirmation prompts hit, and human edits required to make the output usable.
  3. Force a consequential action.Attempt an email send or website deploy path and confirm that approval gates fire, that audit evidence exists, and that global allow is off unless policy explicitly permits it.
  4. Break connectors and sessions.Revoke a connector, expire a browser session, and induce a failure. Confirm errors are visible, credentials do not linger unexpectedly, and operators can stop or take over Browser Operator sessions.
